2025 Hurricane Season Starts with High Alert

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1, with experts predicting normal to above-normal activity—precaution and early preparation are essential for Belizeans.

The 2025 hurricane season officially begins on Sunday, June 1, across the Atlantic Basin, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Belizeans are once again reminded to prepare early and take all forecasts seriously. Experts say this year’s activity could range from normal to above normal, making preparation more important than ever.

The 2025 hurricane season runs through November 30. However, cyclones can sometimes form outside this window. According to forecasts, this season could bring between 13 and 19 named storms. Out of these, six to ten might become hurricanes, while three to five could grow into major hurricanes—Category 3 or stronger. On average, the Atlantic Basin sees 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes per year.

Two major factors will likely influence the 2025 hurricane season. First, there’s a medium chance of a neutral El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phase during peak months. This usually supports average storm activity. Second, experts predict warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures, which can strengthen storm development.

So what does this mean for Belize? Even though seasonal forecasts help estimate how active the season may be, they cannot predict the exact timing or path of a storm. Any of the predicted 13 to 19 storms could impact Belize—or none at all. Therefore, everyone must prepare regardless of the forecast.

Belize’s National Meteorological Service (NMS) will closely monitor weather systems and keep the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) informed. If a threat arises, NEMO and its committees across all levels will take swift action to protect lives and property.

The NMS and NEMO urge the public to revise emergency plans and prepare early. They also remind everyone to follow only official sources—like their websites, social media pages, and mobile apps—for accurate updates. Spreading false information is a crime.

Together, let’s stay alert and keep Belize safe during the 2025 hurricane season.
