Authorities have made progress in the ongoing investigation into a major government laptop theft in Belize. Police have now charged a government employee in connection with the disappearance of 43 Lenovo Chromebooks, valued at more than $33,000. The devices were reported missing from the Government Bookshop on Saint Joseph Street in Belize City.
Investigators identified Ezbert Felix Ramclam Jr., also known as “Suga,” as the main suspect. Ramclam currently works as a government warehouse manager. Between February 18 and February 28, 2025, police believe he took the devices with the intent to permanently keep them. However, he pleaded not guilty when arraigned in court.
Despite the severity of the allegation, the court granted Ramclam bail set at $3,000. He was able to meet the conditions with one surety or two sureties of $1,500 each. His next court date is June 4, 2025.
Meanwhile, the case began gaining traction after a Ministry of Education project coordinator reported the missing laptops on March 29. Soon after, police recovered three Chromebooks on April 2 in Orange Walk Town, specifically at San Lorenzo Housing Site. Moreover, they located five more in different areas of the same town. Authorities later confirmed all eight were part of the stolen batch.
Furthermore, a 59-year-old Orange Walk entrepreneur helped advance the case. He informed officers that he had purchased nine laptops from someone named “Suga.” That information led directly to Ramclam’s arrest.
The government laptop theft in Belize highlights growing concerns over internal theft and accountability. As the case moves forward, both law enforcement and the Ministry of Education continue working together to recover the remaining laptops and ensure justice is served.
