Belize Electricity Rates Increase May Take Effect by 2026

The proposed Belize electricity rates increase could impact households and businesses by July 2026. Belize Electricity Limited (B.E.L.) has submitted a formal request to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) seeking to raise electricity rates by three cents per kilowatt-hour.

The request, filed on April 4, covers the period from January 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028. According to B.E.L., the proposed hike is essential to maintain reliable service and upgrade its power systems. The company argues that without the increase, it may struggle to meet growing demand and operational costs.

B.E.L. revealed that its operating expenses are rising by nearly 5% each year. Notably, 46% of this year’s budget will cover employee payroll alone. Furthermore, the utility company anticipates rising energy generation costs. In fact, the cost of power could exceed $222 million in 2024 and climb above $250 million by 2029.

Over the past few years, B.E.L. says it has exceeded the PUC’s approved expense limits. The reason, it claims, is the challenge of maintaining a modern and expanding power grid. Since 2020, the company has invested heavily in infrastructure. This includes efforts to improve system reliability and increase renewable energy integration. By 2028, fixed assets are projected to grow by 50%.

Now, the PUC has 30 days to review B.E.L.’s submission. After this review, the public will have 10 days to share comments or objections. The PUC will then make a final decision in the months ahead.

If the Belize electricity rates increase gains approval, customers will start seeing higher bills in 2026. While B.E.L. emphasizes the importance of the hike, many Belizeans may express concerns over affordability and timing.
