On Monday, February 24, the Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development (SACD) and the Belize Forest Department responded to reports of a dead crocodile in Corozal near the shoreline.
The juvenile female Morelet’s crocodile, weighing around 20 lbs, had a head measuring 13 cm (eye to eye) and 17 cm (eye to snout). Its tail and right-side limbs were missing, making further measurements difficult.
A deep wound under its jaw suggested a fishing hook injury. Severe trauma to its head, neck, and back indicated sharp object wounds. Clean cuts were also found where the missing limbs should have been.
Crocodiles are a protected species in Belize, and harming them is illegal. The Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS) provides a safe habitat where they help maintain a balanced ecosystem.
