Shyne Barrow Concedes Mesopotamia Seat to Lee Mark Chang

Shyne Barrow Concedes Mesopotamia in Wednesday’s Belize General Elections, as Lee Mark Chang secures victory in the constituency.

“The people have spoken,” Barrow said after the final results were announced.

“Congratulations to Lee Mark Chang. He is now the new area representative for Mesopotamia. I wish him success.”

Barrow, who led the embattled UDP, represented Mesopotamia in Belize City’s South Side. He confirmed his plans to step down as party leader once the UDP selects a qualified successor at a National Convention.

“When the ballots are counted, that’s when you truly know how the people feel,” Barrow said. “I was confident based on my interactions with voters, but they have chosen a different path. I respect that.”

Chang ran under a rival UDP faction led by Tracy Panton, who won the Albert Division against PUP’s Kaya Cattouse.

Official results show Barrow secured only 318 votes, placing third behind Chang with 601 votes and PUP’s Lawrence Ellis with 503.

This outcome signals a major shift in Belize’s political landscape. As the UDP faces internal struggles, the party now looks to rebuild under new leadership. Shyne Barrow Concedes Mesopotamia in what could be a defining moment for the party’s future.
