On April 17, 2025, a shocking incident occurred when a Belize aeroplane hijacked by US citizen forced an emergency landing. The domestic Tropic Air flight, en route from Corozal to San Pedro, carried 14 passengers and two crew members. What began as a routine trip quickly escalated into a terrifying crisis.
The hijacker, later identified as 49-year-old Akinyela Sawa Taylor, a U.S. military veteran, pulled out a knife shortly after takeoff. He demanded the pilot divert the plane out of Belize. Authorities have since revealed that Taylor had previously been denied entry into Belize. Investigators are now working to determine how he re-entered the country and passed through security with a weapon.
