Belize City gun violence has claimed another victim—61-year-old mechanic Carlos Alvelar. The fatal shooting occurred on Thursday, May 1, shortly after 8:00 p.m.
According to police reports, officers responded to a distress call at 8:15 p.m. on Coney Drive. There, they discovered the lifeless body of a man lying on the roadside. The victim was later identified as Carlos Alvelar, a well-known mechanic in the community.
Investigators learned that just minutes earlier, at around 8:07 p.m., Alvelar had been standing outside when two men on a motorcycle approached him. One of the suspects pulled out a firearm, pointed it at Alvelar, and fired several times. The shots struck Alvelar, causing him to collapse on the spot.
Emergency responders transported him to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. However, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
So far, police have not confirmed a motive for the attack. However, detectives are working to identify the two men responsible. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses may provide key leads in the ongoing investigation.
Residents of the area expressed shock and frustration at the violence, calling for increased police patrols and community safety measures. The tragic incident adds to the growing concern over Belize City gun violence, which continues to threaten public safety.
