The Minister of National Security, Michael Peyrefitte, has announced that the Governor-General of Belize has enacted a state of emergency for certain parts of Belize City due to the recent spike in criminal activity.
Its purpose is to detain individuals seeking to cause unrest such as what led to the murders of two men, the shooting of a woman and other recent acts of violence.
As part of this state of emergency, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Marco Vidal, reports that an early morning operation was held commencing at 3:00 AM which led to the detention of 99 well known gang members in Belize City who will all be remanded to the Belize Central Prison for the next 30 days.
Belizeans are asked to be cautious as many gang members have reportedly managed to avoid arrest and have fled the City heading to other districts to hide.
