Belize immigration arrests three foreign nationals wanted in Guatemala for offences against minors. Officials detained two Americans and one Canadian who allegedly entered Belize illegally before their scheduled court appearance.
“I’m not aware of them traveling with minors, but I know they are detained. Immigration and police are looking into the matter,” Commissioner of Police Chester Williams stated. Reports suggest ties to the controversial Lev Tahor sect. However, Williams confirmed no official link.
Last year, Guatemalan authorities rescued 160 children and 40 women from Lev Tahor. Allegations included severe abuse, forced marriages, and human trafficking. The operation took place in Oratorio, about 78 kilometers southeast of Guatemala City.
Prosecutor Nancy Paiz from the Office Against Human Trafficking reported that medical exams and testimonies confirmed forced marriages and abuse. Authorities also discovered a child’s remains during the raid.
Lev Tahor, a fundamentalist Jewish sect founded in Israel in 1988, has faced multiple allegations. Accusations include kidnapping, child marriage, and physical abuse. The Guatemalan Jewish Community distanced itself from the group and supported authorities in protecting vulnerable individuals. Belize immigration arrests continue to be a focus as officials investigate the recent detentions.
