Belize public transportation reform

Belize Public Transportation Reform Begins with New National Bus Company

Belize public transportation is set for a major overhaul, promising safer, cleaner, and more reliable buses through a new National Bus Company and strategic reforms.

Belize public transportation reform is finally on the horizon after years of frustration for commuters. For too long, Belizeans have dealt with broken-down buses, poor service, and dangerous conditions. However, the government now promises real change through the launch of a National Bus Company.

Today, Minister Dr. Louis Zabaneh announced a sweeping overhaul of the country’s outdated bus system. This bold move comes through a Public-Private Partnership aimed at modernizing travel on all national highways.

The reform will fix many longstanding problems. For years, passengers have been crammed into unreliable buses driven by undertrained operators. Buses often leave late, break down randomly, and speed dangerously on highways. Even worse, terminals remain rundown and unwelcoming.

Cabinet has already approved the plan. The government is now engaging all 31 current bus operators. Each operator will either receive a financial payout or earn shares in the new company based on fair market value. This approach ensures inclusion while encouraging cooperation.

Dr. Zabaneh emphasized that the focus remains on Belizeans who depend on buses daily. He noted that the reform prioritizes comfort, safety, and accountability. Therefore, the new system will introduce several modern features:

  • GPS tracking and e-ticketing for better reliability
  • New terminals in Belize City, Orange Walk, and Toledo
  • Cleaner, more spacious, and safer buses
  • Electric vehicles to reduce pollution and fuel costs

Most importantly, Belize public transportation reform represents hope for the future. With better infrastructure, streamlined service, and a commitment to the public good, Belizeans may soon enjoy a bus system that works for everyone.

This long-overdue transformation is not just a promise—it’s already in motion.
