BNTU Demonstration: Schools to Stay Open, Says Ministry of Education

The Belize Ministry of Education confirms that BNTU protests on May 9 won’t disrupt schools, ensuring classes remain open and educational activities continue as usual.

BNTU demonstration plans for Friday will not interrupt school schedules, according to the Ministry of Education. Despite the Belize National Teachers’ Union organizing a protest in Belmopan on May 9, the Ministry has emphasized that schools must remain open and fully operational.

In an official memorandum issued earlier this week, Chief Education Officer Yolanda Gongora reminded general and local managers of government and grant-aided schools that May 9 should be treated as a regular school day. The Ministry’s directive aims to minimize disruption for students and parents, even while acknowledging the teachers’ right to demonstrate.

The Ministry of Education referenced Rule 102(4) of the Education (Amendment) Rules of 2012 to back its stance. This rule states clearly that school closures cannot occur solely due to demonstrations or protests. Therefore, any closure would be a direct violation of educational guidelines.

Moreover, the memorandum stressed that school principals do not have the authority to cancel classes or send notices to parents regarding closures related to the demonstration. The Ministry underscored that only official channels can issue such directives.

While the BNTU demonstration is expected to draw national attention, especially on education policy and teacher concerns, the Ministry insists on maintaining stability in the school system. Students are encouraged to attend classes as usual, and parents are advised not to make alternate arrangements unless officially instructed.

This firm position ensures that while civic expression is respected, education continuity remains a top priority. The BNTU demonstration may spotlight teacher issues, but the government is making it clear that it will not come at the cost of students’ learning time.
