Cannabis Trafficking on Public Bus: Couple Caught with 17 Pounds

Ladyville couple caught trafficking over 17 pounds of cannabis on a Belize public bus, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling via public transportation.

Cannabis trafficking on public bus has landed a Ladyville couple in serious legal trouble after police made a surprise discovery during a routine commute.

On Friday, May 30th, around 10:00 p.m., a public bus was heading from Orange Walk to Belize City. A police constable was also riding the bus, which stopped at the Shell 24-Hour Gas Station on the Philip Goldson Highway to refuel. While there, the officer noticed a strong scent of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

Acting on instinct, the constable focused on a couple seated four rows behind the driver. At their feet sat a green handbag and a black school bag. When the officer questioned the woman about the contents, she simply replied, “nothing.” That answer, however, did not stop the search.

Inside both bags, the constable found eight transparent parcels filled with what appeared to be cannabis. Immediately, the couple was removed from the bus and taken to the police station for further investigation.

The suspects live on Ocean Drive in Ladyville Village. At the station, police weighed the suspected cannabis in the presence of the pair. The total amount came to over 17 pounds.

Police say the couple will face charges of Possession of Controlled Drugs with Intent to Supply. This case of cannabis trafficking on public bus has raised new concerns about drug transport via public transportation.

Law enforcement continues to crack down on drug movement across Belize. Officers urge the public to report any suspicious behavior they observe during commutes. Authorities have made it clear: anyone attempting to move illegal substances, even on public buses, will face consequences.
