Caye Caulker Boating Accident Injures American Tourist

A Caye Caulker boating accident critically injured an American tourist on Thursday afternoon. The victim, 45-year-old Mark Strus from Michigan, was kayaking with his three children when a boat crossed their path.

Around 4:20 p.m., Strus and his son jumped into the water to avoid a collision. However, Strus went underwater and suffered a severe head injury when the boat struck him. Witnesses reported that the vessel, a 25-foot skiff named Reely Hooked, was traveling at moderate speed toward San Pedro Town.

Authorities identified the boat’s captain as 33-year-old Wilson Gonzalez, a Belizean tour guide from San Pedro. He assisted Strus and transported him to the Caye Caulker Polyclinic, where police found him receiving treatment for a profusely bleeding head wound.

Due to his critical condition, Strus was airlifted to a hospital in Belize City for further medical care. Meanwhile, police have detained Gonzalez and obtained a urine sample as part of the ongoing investigation into the Caye Caulker boating accident.
