On Friday, August 27th, members of the House of Representatives put in motion a new amendment to the Summary Jurisdiction Act: Chapter 98 of the Substantive Laws of Belize which would increase the penalty for the offence of spreading or publishing false news from $300 to $3,000 plus a term of up to six months in jail.
On Tuesday, August 31st, members of the Cabinet approved the amendment.
On a brighter note, the Cabinet also approved an amendment to the Court of Appeal Act and Court Rules which would allow the Court to exercise its discretion to extend the time for appeal applications.
