Horse Cruelty Investigation in Belize Unfolds After Viral Video and Theft Case

A disturbing horse cruelty investigation in Belize has triggered national outrage. A viral video shows two young men chopping a tied-down horse while others laugh and record. Police linked the incident to the recent theft of 15 horses near mile 13 on the Philip Goldson Highway.

Three teenagers, aged 16, 17, and 19, are now in custody. Police believe they helped steal the horses and harmed at least one of them. Investigators are preparing to file criminal charges.

Joshua Trapp, a tour operator, owns the stolen animals. He filed a report on April 7 after discovering the theft. His family had been away. When they returned, they found 15 horses missing. Seven were later recovered, tied with ropes.

Trapp saw the viral video. He believes the horse being chopped is one of his. “It’s heartbreaking to see what they did,” he told police.

The horse cruelty investigation in Belize has gained public attention. Animal welfare groups called the video one of the most brutal acts of abuse in years.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams condemned the attack.

We strongly condemn this action. The police will do all we can to bring justice.

Investigators recovered multiple video clips. They are using the footage to identify the exact location of the crime. Police continue to ask the public for help in identifying others involved.

This case has shaken many Belizeans. It also raises urgent questions about animal cruelty and youth violence in the country. As the investigation continues, authorities promise to hold the culprits accountable.
