An illicit aircraft in Belize led to a rapid military response after entering national airspace late Wednesday night. Authorities are now investigating its mysterious fate.
Officials detected the unidentified aircraft departing South America and tracked its flight toward Belize. This marks the second suspected drug plane landing in Belize this month. On March 2, another aircraft crashed and burned in the same general area. Investigators found no sign of drugs or cargo in either case.
According to an official police statement, the Joint Intelligence and Operations Centre activated its security protocol at 9:23 p.m. on March 26. Military personnel and security teams mobilized nationwide to monitor the aircraft’s movements.
Shortly after midnight on March 27, the plane crossed into Belizean airspace. However, it soon veered toward Guatemala, where tracking signals abruptly disappeared. By 3:00 a.m., reports of a large fire near the border raised further suspicion.
A Belize Defence Force (BDF) aircraft, along with a joint enforcement team, responded immediately. Upon arrival, they found burnt wreckage, suggesting a high-performance aircraft.
Authorities continue their investigation into the incident. The repeated presence of suspected drug planes raises concerns about Belize’s role in regional trafficking routes. Law enforcement remains on high alert, working closely with international agencies to combat these threats.
Officials urge residents near the border to report any suspicious activity. Updates on the investigation will follow as authorities uncover more details.
