Authorities sentenced Josue Sic, 45, to two years in prison after finding him guilty of unlawful conduct involving a minor. Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola issued the ruling, which took effect immediately.
The case stemmed from a December 17, 2023, incident when the child’s father, who considered Sic a friend, left his three daughters in Sic’s care. Around 1:30 a.m., the father returned home and found Sic lying on the floor near the children. Noticing something unusual, he examined his 5-year-old daughter and found evidence of inappropriate contact. He immediately reported the matter to the police.
Authorities arraigned Sic on December 19, 2023, and remanded him into custody. During the trial, the Chief Magistrate ruled that the father’s testimony held credibility, stating that the defense failed to challenge it effectively. Sic’s only witness, a former employer, testified on his behalf.
Defense attorney Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson announced plans to appeal, arguing that the prosecution lacked enough evidence for a conviction. Sic faced a maximum sentence of seven years but received two years instead.
Originally, the court scheduled Sic’s mitigation plea for March 3, 2025, but after sentencing, officials took him into custody immediately to begin serving his term.
