KHMH Pension Dispute Sparks Union Action

The KHMH pension dispute escalates as union workers prepare phased industrial action over stalled negotiations, seeking fairness, dignity, and long-term security.

The KHMH pension dispute has reached a boiling point as the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers Union (KHMHAWU) prepares for industrial action. Frustrated by months of stalled negotiations with the Government of Belize, the union says it has seen “little to no tangible progress” despite repeated discussions.

In a letter sent to KHMHA CEO Chandra Nisbet Cansino, the union made its next move clear. They will begin lawful industrial action to press for a fair pension plan. According to the union, this is not just a financial matter—it represents fairness, dignity, and long-term security for healthcare workers who have served Belize with dedication.

The union accuses the government of refusing to negotiate in good faith. They argue this lack of cooperation shows clear disregard for the professionals maintaining the country’s top public hospital. As a result, the union believes action is necessary to protect workers’ futures.

The KHMHAWU announced a phased approach. On Thursday, May 29, 2025, staff will wear union and “Gimme Mi Pension” T-shirts to show solidarity. Then, on Friday, May 30, Level 1 of industrial action begins. This includes peaceful demonstrations, a slower work pace, and public outreach through the media.

If these actions do not lead to progress, the union will escalate efforts. Level 2 will enforce a strict “Work to Rule” policy, meaning staff will do only what their job descriptions require. Finally, if needed, the union will issue a 21-Day Strike Notice under Level 3.

The KHMH pension dispute highlights a deeper struggle for workers’ rights. The union says each step remains legal and measured but necessary to ensure justice for all KHMHA employees. Talks remain at a standstill for now.
