The first measles cases in Belize since 1991 have been confirmed by the Ministry of Health & Wellness. Health officials identified two positive cases in travelers from the Corozal and Cayo districts. These individuals recently returned from a trip to Mexico.
According to an official release issued on April 13, 2025, the travelers arrived in Belize on March 31. Shortly after, two members of the group developed fever and rash symptoms. Medical teams immediately collected samples, which tested positive for the measles virus. The entire group is now in isolation and under close observation.
This development comes as global measles numbers continue to rise. In 2023 alone, health organizations reported over 10 million measles infections worldwide. As a result, health authorities in Belize have responded quickly to contain the spread.
The Ministry stressed that measles spreads easily but is fully preventable with the MMR vaccine. This vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. Children usually receive it in two doses—first at 12 months and again at 18 months.
In response to the confirmed measles cases in Belize, the Ministry has intensified nationwide monitoring for fever and rash symptoms. Health centers are also increasing access to vaccinations, especially for unvaccinated individuals or those unsure of their vaccine history.
Officials are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated or check their immunization records. People can call 0-800-MOH-CARE or visit the nearest health facility for support.
The Ministry of Health & Wellness will hold a media briefing tomorrow. Officials will share more updates, offer vaccine information, and outline further steps to prevent additional cases in the country.
