PG Magistrate Attacked: Magistrate Sashawna Thompson faced a shocking assault today inside the Punta Gorda courtroom, forcing an indefinite halt to all court proceedings.
A defendant suddenly jumped from the dock and charged at Magistrate Sashawna Thompson with an electric fan. Police officers in the courtroom acted fast, tackling the attacker before he could cause serious harm.
The assailant, reportedly from Silk Grass, has a history of criminal charges. Authorities suspect he may suffer from mental health issues. During the struggle, he also struck a police officer before being subdued.
Following the PG Magistrate Attacked incident, officials immediately adjourned all scheduled cases. The court has not announced when hearings will resume.
Magistrate Sashawna Thompson, a Jamaican national, currently serves as the Resident Magistrate for the Toledo District. She joined the Belize Bar of Attorneys for the High Court on February 7, 2025.
Authorities are investigating the attack. Security protocols at the court may be reviewed to prevent similar incidents.
