The Belize Fisheries Department has officially announced the closure of the Queen Conch fishing season, effective May 25, 2025. This decision comes as Belize reaches its national production quota for the 2024–2025 conch season. The announcement, made under Statutory Instrument No. 54 of 2012, was issued by the Honourable Andre Perez, Minister of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation.
According to the ministry, all Queen Conch fishing activities must end by the close of business on that date. Moreover, the closure will remain in effect until the start of the new fishing season on October 1, 2025. As a result, the fishing community must prepare to halt operations in compliance with the seasonal regulation.
Additionally, the Fisheries Department urges all individuals and establishments to use or dispose of any Queen Conch meat in their possession by May 25. Any person or business caught with conch meat after this deadline will face prosecution under the Fisheries Regulations. Therefore, it is critical for fishers, restaurants, and market vendors to act swiftly and responsibly.
The department also encourages the public to help protect marine resources. Anyone witnessing illegal fishing practices should report them immediately by calling 224-4552.
In closing, the Queen Conch fishing season remains vital to Belize’s marine conservation efforts. By following these regulations, communities support sustainable fishing and help preserve ocean biodiversity for future generations.
