Racism in Belize football sparked serious consequences following a heated match between Yo Creek United FC and Mi Gente FC on Sunday. The Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) acted swiftly after receiving reports of racist remarks from Yo Creek players toward an opposing team member.
The incident unfolded during the 82nd minute of play when match officials activated the Football Federation of Belize’s (FFB) strict anti-racism protocol. As a result, officials suspended the game immediately to prevent further escalation.
According to the OWFA, racism, discrimination, and abusive behavior have no place in Belizean football. The association reiterated its zero-tolerance stance in a public statement. This strong response followed an official review of reports submitted by both the match commissioner and the referee.
After careful consideration, the OWFA Disciplinary Committee issued tough penalties. Three Yo Creek United players received suspensions of one year and seven months each. These individuals are now banned from participating in any OWFA-sanctioned tournaments until January 2027. The committee stated clearly that these suspensions are final and cannot be appealed.
Additionally, the Football Federation of Belize may pursue further disciplinary action. Their Disciplinary Committee is currently reviewing the incident and could issue additional penalties.
Racism in Belize football remains a pressing concern, especially as the sport grows in popularity. By enforcing strong consequences, the OWFA aims to protect the integrity of the game and ensure respectful conduct on and off the field. As the case progresses, fans and officials alike will be watching closely to see how national football authorities respond.
