The San Pedro deaths have been linked to carbon monoxide poisoning after forensic experts completed a toxicology analysis. The Belize National Forensic Science Service confirmed that the three American women suffered fatal exposure to the gas.
On February 22, authorities found Kaoutar Naqqad, Imane Mallah, and Wafae El Arar unresponsive at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro. Initial reports attributed their deaths to acute pulmonary oedema while awaiting toxicology results.
Executive Director Gian Cho revealed that the toxicology screening ruled out illicit drugs, pharmaceuticals, and volatile gases like methane, propane, and butane. The results confirmed San Pedro deaths were caused by lethal carbon monoxide exposure.
Medical examiners have updated the official cause of death, citing carbon monoxide poisoning as the underlying factor leading to acute pulmonary oedema
