Shyne Barrow Challenges the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) over its decision to allow both UDP factions to use red in the March 12 election. He warns of legal action if unauthorized candidates use the party’s official color.
In a February 23 letter to Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai, Barrow insisted that the UDP remains a single, unified party. He argued that factionalism violates the party’s constitution, and members engaging in it were lawfully expelled.
The EBC ruled 3-2 in favor of allowing both UDP factions—Barrow’s and Tracy Panton’s—to use red. One opposition representative supported exclusive red for Barrow’s UDP, while another suggested different shades of red. The final decision on symbols and colors will be confirmed after Nomination Day, February 26.
Shyne Barrow Challenges the ruling, stating it contradicts the UDP Constitution and a Judge’s order, which recognizes one Central Executive. He also accused the EBC of interfering in a matter already before the courts.
Barrow warned that the UDP will take immediate legal action if the EBC assigns red to any unauthorized candidate. He emphasized that each political party should have a distinct color to prevent voter confusion.
He also expressed frustration over the EBC’s failure to respond to previous letters from his legal counsel, Professor Chris Malcom. Shyne Barrow Challenges any attempts to assign UDP red to non-official candidates, insisting the party will not tolerate any deviation.
