Tragedy strikes Vancouver Filipino Festival during what should have been a joyous celebration in the Sunset neighborhood. On Saturday evening, a black SUV sped through a crowd gathered for the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, killing several people and injuring many others.

The crash happened around 8:00 PM at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street. Festival-goers had been celebrating Filipino heritage and honoring Indigenous warrior Lapu-Lapu when terror shattered the festivities. Witnesses described a horrifying scene, with victims sprawled across the street and screams filling the air.

Emergency crews rushed to the area within minutes. Meanwhile, civilians immediately sprang into action, pulling the injured to safety. Disturbing video captured desperate efforts to free a baby trapped under the SUV’s wreckage. Despite the chaos, many bystanders displayed extraordinary bravery.

The driver jumped out of the vehicle and tried to escape. However, quick-thinking bystanders chased him down and tackled him before police arrived. Officers arrested the suspect at the scene. Authorities confirmed several deaths and multiple injuries but have not yet released official numbers. Investigators continue to search for a motive behind the attack.

Organizers Filipino BC and the Sunset on Fraser Business Association had planned the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party to showcase Filipino culture with music, dancing, and food. Thousands attended, expecting a day of pride and unity. Instead, heartbreak swept through the community.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim quickly offered condolences, standing with grieving families. “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time,” he said. Officials also asked anyone with videos or photos to contact police and help with the investigation.
