Trial Farm Fatal Accident Kills Cyclist

A tragic cycling accident in Trial Farm, Belize, claims a life, highlighting urgent road safety issues amid calls for improved lighting and traffic enforcement.

A Trial Farm fatal accident has left a community in mourning after a cyclist lost his life on Saturday night, May 10th, 2025. Authorities identified the victim as Francisco “Wero” Melendez.

The incident occurred in Trial Farm Village, located in the Orange Walk District. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Melendez had just left home to buy a Mother’s Day gift for his wife.

As he headed back along San Martin Road, a passing SUV struck him. The crash threw him off his bicycle, causing serious injuries.

Emergency personnel quickly responded and rushed Melendez to a nearby medical facility. Sadly, he died shortly after arriving due to severe trauma.

Police identified the driver of the SUV as Anastacio Bermudes. He remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities placed him in custody, and according to Romero, he will face charges.

This Trial Farm fatal accident has triggered outrage among residents. Many say San Martin Road remains extremely unsafe, especially at night. Poor lighting and frequent speeding make the area hazardous for both cyclists and pedestrians.

One resident posted online,

“Make them put up street lights. It’s too dark. Too many close calls already.”

In response, villagers are urging local officials to improve safety. They want proper street lights installed and better traffic enforcement before another tragedy occurs.

Police continue their investigation. So far, they have not confirmed whether speed, distraction, or alcohol contributed to the crash.

Meanwhile, community leaders are calling for immediate action. They believe basic improvements could help save lives.

Francisco Melendez’s untimely death serves as a painful reminder. Belizeans must prioritize road safety—especially in rural areas with limited infrastructure. With stronger community pressure, residents hope to see lasting change.
