The Elections and Boundaries Commission has made a key decision regarding the UDP election symbol. Moses “Shyne” Barrow and Tracy Panton will share the traditional UDP Red with different symbols on the ballot for the upcoming general elections.
On Tuesday, the commission voted on how to assign colours and symbols for the 2025 elections. They considered six options:
- Both factions using UDP red with different symbols
- A new shade of red (other than the traditional UDP red) with a designated RGB or HEX code
- Any colour other than red without a symbol
- Only a symbol, without colour
- Tracy Panton exclusively using traditional red
- Moses Shyne Barrow exclusively using traditional red
With just 22 days before Belizeans head to the polls, this unprecedented ruling has raised questions. Can two rival factions truly coexist under the same UDP red, or will this lead to further political tensions? Some sources say at least one party is considering legal action.
In Belize, the Elections and Boundaries Commission plays a crucial role in assigning colours to candidates, as political parties are not officially registered. The EBC typically uses traditional party colours to avoid confusion on the ballot. Sample ballots featuring the UDP Election Symbol will be issued before Election Day to ensure voters understand the final design.
The commission is led by Oscar Sabido Puga, with four other members: Conrad Lewis, Orlando Espat, Phillippa Griffith Bailey, and Alberto August.
As per Section 88(2) of the Constitution, the Governor-General appoints the chairman and four members of the commission. These individuals are chosen for their integrity and national standing, with appointments made following consultations between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
