Retired public officers took to the streets, demanding their long-overdue unpaid benefits. Nearly 30 years ago, the government refused to give them salary increments.
Lisbeth Castillo, interim vice president of the Association of Beneficiaries and Retired Public Officers, led the protest. She said they wanted to raise awareness and pressure the government to act.
“We have waited almost 30 years for money that rightfully belongs to us,” Castillo said.
Between 1995 and 1997, the government withheld salary increases and invested that money into retail shares. Those shares gained dividends, but retirees say officials miscalculated their pensions, causing financial losses.
“They promised to fix our pensions, but that never happened,” Castillo added. “Now, retirees from that time receive pensions based on incorrect salaries.”
The group is demanding immediate payments. Many retirees struggle financially and need their money now.
“We have retired BDF soldiers, ex-policemen, teachers, nurses—everyone paid by the public purse,” Castillo explained. “Only those affected during those two years should benefit from this trust, not today’s public officers.”
Another retiree expressed frustration. “Many of us have died waiting, and we are still here fighting for our unpaid benefits.”
Both major political parties have ignored this issue for years. Despite multiple meetings, nothing has changed.
“It’s frustrating,” a protester said. “If the government respected us, they would fix this.”
Retirees refuse to give up. “Even if I have to come in a wheelchair, I will be here,” one vowed.
They accuse the government of misusing funds and delaying their rightful payments.
“The government spends our money however they want,” a protester said.
The group demands immediate action. They want their money before more retirees pass away without receiving what they earned.
