Police have launched a full investigation into a San Pedro police custody death that occurred early Monday morning, May 12, 2025. The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Selvin Eziera Sealy, a Belizean from the D.F.C. Area of San Pedro Town.
The incident began around 6:20 a.m. when a security officer saw Sealy acting strangely on the beach near Villa Abrazos. According to reports, Sealy climbed into a pine tree, claiming a dog was chasing him. Shortly after, he jumped into the hotel’s pool and refused to come out.
While trying to exit the water, Sealy reportedly slipped twice and hit his chin. Eventually, the security guard and a supervisor handcuffed him and moved him to the front of the property to wait for police.
When officers arrived, Sealy allegedly resisted arrest and had to be restrained again. He was then transported to the San Pedro Police Station. However, officers say he lost consciousness upon arrival.
They rushed him to the San Pedro Polyclinic around 8:20 a.m., where Dr. Nairobis Almira pronounced him dead on arrival.
Following this San Pedro police custody death, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) began reviewing all details. They confirmed that Sealy’s body had abrasions on his knees, foot, wrist, and shin. His body was transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for a postmortem exam.
Currently, police are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering witness statements. The investigation aims to uncover what happened between Sealy’s detainment and his tragic death.
This case has sparked concern within the San Pedro community, with residents demanding answers and accountability. Authorities say all procedures will be reviewed carefully to determine if force was excessive or appropriate.
