An Albert Street assault left an elderly Belize City resident recovering from injuries after a shocking home robbery earlier this week.
According to police reports, 86-year-old Jose Riva had just returned home after making a withdrawal from a local credit union. As he entered his house on Albert Street, an unknown man suddenly attacked him from behind.
The assailant pushed Riva inside the home and hit him with a pint bottle, causing a serious injury to his hand. Despite his age, Riva tried to defend himself, but the attacker continued to overpower him.
The intruder then searched Riva’s pockets and stole approximately $800 in cash before fleeing the scene. No one else was inside the home during the attack.
Riva immediately contacted the police and provided a detailed report. Officers processed the crime scene and began their investigation. So far, no arrests have been made, but authorities are reviewing nearby security footage and asking the public for any leads.
This Albert Street assault has raised concerns among residents, especially regarding the safety of elderly individuals who live alone. Community leaders are urging neighbors to stay alert and report suspicious activity.
Police have increased patrols in the area and are encouraging residents to use caution, especially when handling large sums of money.
Meanwhile, Riva is recovering at home and remains shaken by the violent encounter. Authorities continue to investigate and are working to bring the suspect to justice.
