The Government Press Office of Guatemala has released a statement claiming that the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, has tested positive for COVID-19.
This drastic news comes on the same day that Guatemala has officially re-opened its borders and international airports to allow tourists in.
The borders and international airports were closed six months ago in an attempt to stop the further spread of the Coronavirus.
Giammattei has entered self quarantine and will remain isolated from all public activity until he recovers.
All communications will be conducted remotely.
